“A man walks through life painting a portrait, not of what he could have done, or should have done, but of what he did.” -Anonymous
THIS IS THE PIECE THAT WON THE WORTMELDUNGEN OR GERMAN SHORT FORM LITERARY AWARD
A man was dying; when he realized he was dying, he saw God holding a box in His hand.
𝐆𝐨𝐝 𝐬𝐚𝐒𝐝: β€œIt’s time to go.”
π“π‘πž 𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐚𝐒𝐝: β€œSo soon? I had so many plans.”
𝐆𝐨𝐝 𝐬𝐚𝐒𝐝: β€œSorry, but it’s time to go!”
π“π‘πž 𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐬𝐀𝐞𝐝 𝐆𝐨𝐝: β€œWhat’s in your box?”
𝐆𝐨𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐩π₯𝐒𝐞𝐝: β€œYour belongings.”
π“π‘πž 𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐬𝐀𝐞𝐝: β€œMy belongings? You mean: all my things? My clothes, my money, and so on?”
𝐆𝐨𝐝 𝐬𝐚𝐒𝐝: β€œThose are no longer yours!
They belong to the earth.”
π“π‘πž 𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐚𝐒𝐝: β€œWhat about my memories?”
𝐆𝐨𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐩π₯𝐒𝐞𝐝: β€œThey belong to time.”sw
π“π‘πž 𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐬𝐀𝐞𝐝: β€œMy family and friends?”
𝐆𝐨𝐝 𝐬𝐚𝐒𝐝: β€œNo, they were temporary!”
π“π‘πž 𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐬𝐀𝐞𝐝: β€œWhat about my wife and children?”
𝐆𝐨𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐩π₯𝐒𝐞𝐝: β€œThey belong to your heart.”
π“π‘πž 𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐬𝐀𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐒𝐧: β€œSo surely the contents of the box are my body parts, right?”
𝐆𝐨𝐝 𝐬𝐚𝐒𝐝: β€œNo; they belong to dust!”
π“π‘πž 𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐚𝐒𝐝: β€œThen surely it’s my soul?”
𝐆𝐨𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐩π₯𝐒𝐞𝐝: β€œWrong! Your soul belongs to Me.”
The man, with tearful eyes and great fear, took the box from God and opened it, only to find it empty.
π“π‘πž 𝐦𝐚𝐧, 𝐰𝐒𝐭𝐑 𝐚 π›π«π¨π€πžπ§ 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭, 𝐬𝐚𝐒𝐝: β€œI never had anything?”
𝐆𝐨𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐩π₯𝐒𝐞𝐝: β€œThat’s right, you owned nothing.
π“π‘πž 𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐬𝐀𝐞𝐝: β€œSo, what did I have?”
𝐆𝐨𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐩π₯𝐒𝐞𝐝: β€œThe moments of your life were yours.
