The Provincial Health Office (PHO), through
Charlie magne Dequito, HIV AIDS program coordinator, has introduced HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) medication as part of its ongoing efforts to curb the increasing number of HIV cases in the Province of Iloilo. During a courtesy visit on April 29, 2026, Dequito emphasized the importance of this preventive measure, particularly targeting high-risk groups such as men who have sex with men (MSM), who are statistically more vulnerable to HIV infection.
HIV PrEP is a highly effective preventive strategy involving a daily pill or periodic injection taken by HIV-negative individuals to significantly reduce their risk of contracting the virus. By offering this medication, the PHO aims to promote safer sexual practices and enhance public health awareness in the community. With the support of Dr. Mary Joyce Bermejo of the Municipal Health Office, the initiative reflects the officeβs commitment to proactive healthcare interventions designed to halt the spread of HIV and protect vulnerable populations.
