On August 4, 2025, Mayor Richard Garin convened a meeting with personnel from the University of the Philippines Visayas to discuss the establishment of a hybrid coconut seed farm spanning approximately 17.76 hectares on the UPV Miagao Campus, specifically in Barangay Lumanggan, Miagao, Iloilo. This strategic location was chosen for its favorable climate and soil conditions, ideal for coconut cultivation and research.
The project aims to significantly increase the supply of high-quality seednuts to support the planting and replanting efforts not only in Western Visayas but also in other regions.
Collaborating closely with the PCA, UPV will leverage its expertise in agricultural research and extension services to ensure the success of this venture. This partnership further cements UPV’s role as a key contributor to the socioeconomic development of Miagao and surrounding areas, continuing its legacy as a long-time development partner for over 25 years.
In his address during the meeting, Mayor Garin expressed enthusiastic support for the project, warmly welcoming the initiative and highlighting its potential to transform the local coconut industry and strengthen the Municipality’s agricultural sector.
